Role - Speaker
While
your main focus as a speaker is on preparing your speech ready for
delivery on the morning, it is important that you keep in contact
with the Chairman and your Speech Evaluator.
The
Chairman should contact you well prior to the meeting to confirm
that you are on track to deliver your speech, but don't rely on
this to remind you that you have a speech. Make sure that the Chairman
knows of any special requirements you have, such as timing, needing
the OHP, any special room layout or the use of props.
Discuss
your speech and your objectives, both manual and personal objectives,
with your evaluator prior to the meeting.
Remember
to bring your manual to the meeting.
When
you arrive in the morning confirm where you are on the agenda, and
that all your requirements have been met. If you need to set things
up for your speech try to do so before the meeting or at the break,
not after you have been introduced. Sit where you can get out easily.
It is a good idea to sit well away from your evaluator - it is quite
unsettling to finish your speech and be able to read the evaluator's
notes while you are waiting for the oral evaluation.
During
the meeting try to relax and not keep reading your notes - it is
distracting for the other speakers. If you need a last-minute practice
use another room. Feel free to decline to take part in table topics
if you are called - you are doing quite enough speaking anyway.
